There's no single 'best' ZTE 5G CPE—and that's okay
If you're looking for a straight answer like 'buy the MC801A and done,' you're probably going to be frustrated. I've been in telecom procurement for a bit over 5 years now, and one thing I've learned: the 'best' 5G CPE depends entirely on what you're trying to do.
Here's the thing people don't tell you: a device that flies in a fixed wireless access (FWA) deployment for a suburban home might be a nightmare in a rural enterprise with 50+ users. And what works for a temporary construction site might be overkill for a coffee shop.
So instead of telling you to buy one thing, I'm going to walk through the three main scenarios I see on the ground, and what's actually worked for each.
Scenario 1: Budget-conscious but need solid performance for a small deployment
I call this the 'we have 10-20 users, and we can't spend $800 per device' scenario. Think small retailers, temporary offices, or rural health clinics.
In my role coordinating network deployments for a mid-sized integrator, I've seen a ton of people default to the cheapest option they can find. That's a mistake. Here's what I've found works:
- ZTE MC7010 – This is the workhorse. It's not flashy. It's not the fastest. But for about $150-200 (depending on volume and region), it handles basic FWA duties well. I've deployed these for a client needing 15 simultaneous connections at a remote field office. Speeds sat around 150-300 Mbps down, which was more than enough for their email and VoIP needs.
- Key limitation: It's a consumer-grade device. The Wi-Fi range is mediocre (maybe 30-40 feet through walls). Don't expect it to serve a whole floor of an office building.
One thing I heard a lot: 'But the cheaper USB dongles are only $50, why wouldn't I use those?' Fair point. The issue is those dongles (like the old MF series) lack proper antenna design and heat dissipation. We lost a contract in 2023 because we tried to save $120 per site using USB dongles in a rural deployment. Three failed within the first month. The customer switched to Ericsson. Painful lesson.
Scenario 2: Performance-first, where speed and reliability are non-negotiable
This is the 'enterprise campus, 50+ users, video conferencing, maybe some cloud-based apps' scenario. Budget matters less than uptime.
I'll be blunt: consumer CPEs just don't cut it here. The MC7010 starts choking above 25 concurrent devices. The Wi-Fi mesh becomes a bottleneck.
What I've tested (and actually deployed):
- ZTE MC801A – This is the step up. It's a 5G CPE with Wi-Fi 6, which is a big deal for handling multiple devices. At one client site (a 40-person mid-size law office), we deployed three of these in a mesh setup. It handled video calls, large file transfers, and the occasional Zoom bomb. Speeds consistently hit 400-600 Mbps down.
- ZTE MC889 – Honestly, this is for heavy lifting. It's a 5G industrial router, not really a CPE. But if you need multiple WAN failover options (we've used it with both 5G and wired backup), it's a game-changer. It's not cheap (can run $600+), but for a logistics depot or a hospital, it's worth it.
One thing I see a lot: 'The MC801A is expensive, just use the MC7010 and put a good Wi-Fi access point behind it.' That works, sort of. But the MC7010's ethernet port is only 1 Gbps, and the CPU can't handle the packet forwarding for >30 devices. The latency jumps from 20ms to 80ms during peak usage. Not good for VoIP.
Scenario 3: The 'need it yesterday' emergency deployment
This is my specialty. When a client calls at 9 AM needing a temporary network set up by 5 PM because their primary line got cut during construction.
In March 2024, a client called at 10 AM on a Thursday. They'd run fiber to a new building, but the trenching crew hit a gas line (no joke). They needed 5G backup for 30 staff by the next morning or they'd miss a major product launch. Normal procurement takes 2-3 days.
Here's what I scrambled to get:
- ZTE MC801A (2 units) – because it's widely available from distributors in my region. The MC7010 would have been cheaper, but the emergency supplier only had the MC801A in stock.
- Outcome: We paid $200 extra in rush shipping (on top of the $950 base cost for two units), set them up in a basic mesh in about 3 hours, and the launch went off without a hitch. The alternative was losing a $12,000 contract.
People assume rush orders always cost more. They do, but in this case, the cost was far less than the penalty for missing the deadline. I've tested 6 different rush delivery options over the years; having a pre-negotiated relationship with a local distributor who stocks popular CPE models is what actually works.
How to figure out which scenario you're in
Stop guessing. Here's a quick litmus test I use myself:
- If you have less than 20 users and budget is tight, start with the MC7010. If it works, great. If it chokes, you can always upgrade to the MC801A. Don't overthink it.
- If you have 20-50 users or need consistent 500+ Mbps, go straight to the MC801A. The extra cost (maybe $100-150 more per unit) pays for itself in fewer headaches. When I switched from budget to premium CPE for a client's remote office, user feedback scores improved by 23% because calls stopped dropping.
- If you're doing emergency deployment, don't worry about the model. Worry about stock availability and speed of delivery. Call a distributor first, ask what they can get to you today, and choose from that list. The 'perfect' model doesn't matter if you can't get it.
The bottom line: there's no one-size-fits-all ZTE 5G CPE. The right choice depends on your scale, your budget, and how much downtime you can tolerate. And hey, if you ever find yourself in a jam like I was in March 2024, just get what's available and move on. Done is better than perfect in those cases.
